Itandje, whose goalkeeping expertise has successfully benched Cameroon long time keeper, Kameni Carlos, made a series of spectacular stops from as early as the opening minutes of the game, blocking with his feet when Tunisia captain Yassine Chikhaoui was set up with a good early chance.
Another important block by Itanje who plays in Turkey and one time back-up goalkeeper at Liverpool, was midway through the second-half when he denied defender Alaeddine Yahia as hosts Tunisia threw players forward in an increasingly desperate bid to force a goal.
However, the boys of Coach Volke Finke failed to make use several scoring opportunities. Cameroon had two good chances to grab a win, first when Jean Makoun missed the target from close range after being teed up by Captain Samuel Eto'o and then when Pierre Webo failed to scramble home the ball when he was unmarked at the back post.
Meanwhile, Tunisia coach Ruud Krol insists his team is ready to face the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon in their 2014 FIFA World Cup playoff. The Dutchman spoke to Cafonline.com ahead of the first leg on Sunday in Rades.
He said despite decline in recent years, Cameroon remains a formidable squad with a proven track record. “We are not worried and do not fear them either. We will build our plans and strategies towards our target. We believe each member of the team is capable of playing his part, whether on the bench or playing,” he added confidently.
The second leg is scheduled for next November 17 at the Amadou Ahijo stadium in Yaoundé, Cameroon.
