Cameroon’s former international and four-time African footballer of the year, Samuel Eto’o Fils and longtime partner Ivorian-born Georgette met with Pope Francis at the Vatican on Monday September 1, 2014.

According to Reuters, Samuel Eto’o and Georgette met Pope Francis for a special audience held before a special interreligious “Match for Peace”, at the Paul VI hall at the Vatican.
The London based news agency reported that current and former soccer stars representing various religious faiths did participate in the “Match for Peace”, which was held in the Stadio Olimpico in Rome on Monday night.
The game was part of the Pope's call for 'dialogue' in times of religiously motivated wars and to promote a diplomatic solution to the ongoing crisis in Gaza. Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger and Argentina manager Gerardo 'Tata' Martino managed the two teams. The two teams, named PUPI and SCHOLAS were captained by Zanetti and Italy goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon.
Samuel Eto'o reportedly spoke to his wife Georgette before meeting Pope Francis, for the special audience held before the special interreligious "Match for Peace."
