Transport Agencies plying the Yaoundé-Bamenda Highway, have stepped up fares to FCFA 7000, following an immediate congestion caused by the suspension of 6 agencies by the Minister of Transport, Jean Ernest Ngalle Bibehe.

The agencies suspended include, Avenir Mezam voyages, Samouri, Tadkon Express, Mazi Group Express, Avenue Stop and Garanti Express. These agencies since March 21, were prohibited from operating, following the order.

Reports say the other agencies plying same road, have increased transport fares, following an increasing number of travelers and demands. Yaoundé-Bamenda that usually costs FCFA 6000, has moved to FCFA 7000, while Yaoundé-Mbouda(in the West region),has also gone up to FCFA 5000.

The decision to suspend these agencies, come as a result of the fact that, they failed to respect a one month deadline, given by Minister Bibehe, to regularise their clandestine status. Only two agencies in Bamenda respected the order. An audit team had earlier been to the said agencies, to evaluate their status.

He further gave 15 days for these agencies to comply, but they ignored his demands. To the minister, the suspension is part of efforts to reduce road accidents sometimes caused by poor state of busses, amongst others.
Still in a continuous effort to reduce road accidents, the Ministry of Transport on February 15, published a list of 13 travel agencies, accused of using excess speed along the Douala-Yaoundé highway. Top agencies such as Finex, United, Touristique, featured amongst the 13. It was on this stance, that he gave transporters an extra 15 days to regularise their status.
