The first-ever fashion show, organised for Women with disabilities , takes place at Djeuga Palace, this Saturday March 30, in Yaoundé.

The mind-blowing event is organised by a nongovernmental organisation, Sisterspeak 237, with its headquarters in Yaoundé.

On the runway this Saturday, 18 girls and women with disabilities, ranging from 9 to 39 years, will be participating. These women are said to have different ranges of disabilities, such as intellectual disability, mobility, visually impaired, hearing challenges. They all come from the North West, South West, Littoral and Centre regions of Cameroon. .

The organiser and Chief Executive Officer of Sisterspeak 237, an advocate for women rights as well as rights of persons living with disabilities, Comfort Mussa, says the show will help boost the morale of these women and engage Cameroonian communities in conversations about access, inclusion and proposing solutions on what every other stakeholder in the community can do to make life better for women with disabilities.

"Sisterspeak 237, has been doing the national storytelling competition, since 2015 ,and one thing we've wanted to achieve with this, is to get more stories about persons with disabilities in mainstream media, and to get more persons with disabilities talking about every other issue and also issues related to persons with disabilities in mainstream media. We have done this and had many winners, including persons with disabilities, and had many stories about persons with disabilities but we wanted to take it one step further, and that's why we are using the fashion show. Fashion show for us is more than just fashion. There's going to be fashion, that's the visibility part of it. The women will be seen as bold and confident, as capable, as assets to the society and they will on the runway, tell their stories. As our slogan says, if we don't tell our stories, who will”, Comfort explained.

To her, choosing women with disabilities, is because, they are part of the wider community of women in Cameroon and she seeks to amplify the voices of women on issues that matter most to them. She cried against the inadequate representation of these persons in the media.
