Hitherto considered a wet nose in Buea politics, the banker, lawyer, long-serving CPDM resource person and Section President triumphed over mayoral hopefuls like Dr. George Mafany Teke, Journalist Kange Williams Wasaloko, and Dr. Amos Namanga Ngongi, all natives of Buea.
After rounds of negotiations with the aforementioned aspirants under the guidance of Dima Gabriel and Motanga Gerald from the CPDM Central Committee, Mafani Namange’s over two-decade of active militancy in the CPDM tilted the tides in his favour.
The man who became Fako III CPDM Section President in 2015 with a mission for change and renewal harvested 39 votes out of 40. The Buea Council has 41 councillors. One of them staged a walkout protest against the overbearing dictates of the Central Committee of the party. The party had opted for investitures instead of primaries to choose municipal executives.
Mafani Namange is currently the South West Regional Manager of Cameroon’s housing bank, Crédit Foncier du Cameroun after serving in the institution in varied capacities in Buea, Bamenda and Douala for more than 20 years.
He was recently sworn-in as a lawyer and is currently pursuing a PhD in International Law at the University of Buea. The soft-spoken politician is married and a father.
Deputy Mayors of the Buea Council were also elected. They include: First Deputy Mayor, Akawoh Minerva Epse Molinge; Second Deputy Mayor, Mosoko Edward Motuwe; Third Deputy Mayor, HRM Chief Marcus Motove Etonge; Fourth Deputy Mayor, Enjema Mbonde Magdalene epse Vevanje.
Mafani Namange replaces Ekema Patrick Esunge who succumbed to the cold hands of death at Polyclinique IDIMED, Rue Koloko Bonapriso in Douala Sunday, October 27, 2019 after a malaise. It is believed that the lion-hearted Mayor of Buea suffered from a heart attack.
Second Deputy Mayor Lyonga John Efande until this day served as interim Mayor of the Buea Council.
