Cameroon’s Ministry of Basic Education is concluding plans to ensure that end of course examinations go on hitch free throughout the national territory, including the crisis-hit North West and South West Regions, the Secretary of State to the Minister of Basic Education has said.

While addressing education stakeholders at a seminar in Mbalmayo, Secretary of State Dr. Asheri Vivian Kilo said measures have been taken to push through with the examinations this 2019 as in previous years.

“These exams would go on successfully in the two regions,” she stressed.

Kilo averred that, the ministry plans to effectively organize end of course examinations given that the academic year is fast drawing to an end.

The Secretary of State underscored that, despite the challenging environment some pupils are still attending school in the North West and South West Regions. Others she stated have been acquiring knowledge through informal means to prepare for the examinations.

She reiterated that, no matter the problems at hand, there is no reason why children should be stopped from going to school. Kilo decried that frustrating schools for whatever reason is a violation of children’s right to education.

Though it sounds possible on paper, some schools have been destroyed while others have become camps for the belligerents.

Moreover, most villages and towns have been emptied of their residents with about 200 of these villages and towns burnt down according to statistics from some None Governmental Organisations (NGOs).

For example between Buea and Kumba in the South West region, most of the villages and towns are empty. Last year, some students of Muyuka had to move to Buea to write end of course examinations following an attack on an examination centre.

Beyond the issues of this year’s examination, the basic education ministry is upgrading the capacity of teachers ahead of a complete overhaul of the basic education curricular in the country from 2021.

According to the Secretary of State, the new approach is to make pupils competitive in line with global trends. Kilo told reporters that, the new approach is ‘project base’. This she said entails teaching kids in relation to their environment and objects that make them feel and live the reality of lessons’ thought.

The University Don said, Basic Education Minister Lauren Serge Etoundi Ngoa has given a two years period to enable teachers update their capacities before the new curricular goes into effect beginning 2021.
