The Embassy of the United States of America has described as “fake” news making rounds to the effect that the U.S. has intentions to lead a military intervention in Cameroon in a bid to resolve the socio-political crisis in the country’s North West and South West Regions.
In a press release Friday, October 9, 2020, the U.S. Embassy in Yaoundé says the U.S. has no interest in intervention in Cameroon.
“The U.S. Embassy categorically denies the assertions in recent fake news stories claiming that U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Kelly Craft recently announced alleged U.S. intentions regarding a supposed military intervention in Cameroon,” the press release read in part. “The United States has no such interest or intention.”
Ambassador Craft did not comment about Cameroon in the recent time periods indicated in the stories and she has never stated or implied that the United States would consider military intervention of any nature in Cameroon, the embassy clarifies.
“Ambassador Craft, along with other U.S. officials, has occasionally raised concerns about humanitarian needs and human rights violations and abuses in Cameroon,” the press release read further.
The U.S. Embassy in Yaoundé also sheds light on the September 7 resolution of the U.S. Senate that expresses concerns about the human rights violations and abuses in Cameroon’s North West and South Wes Regions.
The Embassy’s press release stated: “Similarly, contrary to claims in recent fake news stories, neither the U.S. Senate nor the full U.S. Congress has held a debate on, or taken any action to approve, any U.S. intervention in Cameroon.
“While members of the U.S. Senate introduced a non-binding resolution on September 7 expressing concern about human rights violations in Cameroon and calling for an end to violence, the resolution did not call for intervention.
“Therefore, there is no decision awaiting the President’s approval. Finally, there have been no stories published by U.S. news outlets to support the claims of these fake stories.”
With respect to the Anglophone crisis, as a friend and partner of Cameroon, the United States says her position remains constant.
“We call on both sides to the conflict in the Northwest and Southwest to abjure further violence and to enter into an open-ended dialogue without pre-conditions.”
