A soldier of the 501 Air Base in Bamenda who shot and killed 49-year-old Fuh Augustin at Saint Mary Soledad Hospital in Mankon Wednesday, February 19, 2020, has been arrested and is currently under detention at the Bamenda Gendarmerie Company, the Minister of Defense has said.

Information has it that Fuh Augustin, father of five with abode at Last Pole in Ngomgham, Bamenda II Subdivision was shot four times on the chest after being chased into the hospital premises at Alakuma where he had been to get the wounds of two of his cleaned.

In a prompt move to clarify public opinion, Beti Assomo Joseph, Cameroon’s Minister Delegate at the Presidency of the Republic in charge of Defence in a communiqué Wednesday wrote:

“A deadly incident occurred today at about 10:00 a.m. at the Saint Mary Catholic Hospital in Mankon in the city of Bamenda, Mezam Division, North West Region.

“As a matter of fact, a Toyota Tercel vehicle with the registration number NO 366 AB was stopped by a patrol of the 501 Air Base, which was tracking a group of secessionist terrorists. The vehicle fled after a refusal to comply, forcing the patrol to chase it.

“After a chase on the public highway, the suspect vehicle changed course despite the usual warnings, before attempting to hide in the parking lot of the Saint Mary Catholic Hospital, precisely where a soldier opened fire, in violation of the rules of engagement.

“Fuh Augustin, born on February 1, 1971 in Bafut, driver of the suspect vehicle, was shot dead and his body taken to the Bamenda Regional Hospital mortuary.

“It appears from the preliminary findings that the suspect vehicle also had on board a certain Fru Romarus, who was shot in the left leg two weeks ago on the Mbengwi-Bamenda road during a confrontation with the Defence and Security Forces. This resulted in the amputation of his leg at the Saint Mary Catholic Hospital, where he was receiving treatment as an outpatient.

“The soldier who fired the shots was immediately arrested and is in the Bamenda Gendarmerie Company.

“An in flagrante delicto investigation was immediately ordered and is underway. The quintessence of its findings may be made public in due course.”
